Manometer
CPAP machine pressure is measured using a manometer. Pressure settings generally range from about 4 cm H2O to 20 cm H2O. 4 cm H2O is hardly felt whereas 20 cm H2O is a significant amount of pressure.
Proper CPAP Pressure Settings
Comfort (or lack thereof) is a common complaint with CPAP treatment and a big part of this centers around pressure settings. The patient's doctor will determine the proper pressure settings and only he/she can order changes. The patient cannot change his/her own cpap settings. For patients with severe sleep apnea symptoms the discomfort of high pressure is often worth the relief.
Ramp Feature
The ramp feature gives the patient more time to fall asleep by starting at a low pressure setting and gradually increasing the pressure over 15 to 30 minutes. If, after this time period, the patient has not fallen asleep he/she can hit the ramp button again to reset the cycle. Many patients find the ramp feature extremely helpful, especially those using higher pressure settings.
